Phoenixation Productions, an English-language theatre company, is a non-profit
performance group that relies totally on community donations and sponsorships to produce
quality entertainment and artistic performances, often to raise funds and awareness for
community charities. The company derives its name from the phoenix, the mythical bird
representing the birth of something beautiful from nothing.
Formed in early 2006, Phoenixation Productions is the brainchild of Justin Gaurav Murgai, the
group’s artistic director and producer. An experienced stage designer, Justin has been
involved in theatre since a very young age and started the group to address the lack of
English-language community performances in Hong Kong at the time.
In the spirit of the group, the first production, Fairytale Soup, was originally conceived from a
random idea of calling anyone interested to join a community theatre effort. The goal was to
draw together a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, nationalities
(expatriate and local) in an open and experimental, and positive environment.
Within two days, a group of four people met at the HK Fringe Club and booked the venue
even before having a script or a full cast and crew! A week later, a group, which would
eventually comprise 28 people with experience ranging from a few years to a few decades,
had been organized and the production was born!
Phoenixation Productions plans to host productions and workshops throughout the year
offering the general community an opportunity to participate and be touched by theatre.
